1/ Verb + to + infinitive

want, decide, forget, need, help, hope, try, would like (´d like), would love (´d love)

Examples:

  • They want to buy a new TV.
  • I decided to learn more.
  • Don´t forget to water the flowers!
  • I need to go now.
  • We can help you to write your essay.
  • I hope to win the competition.
  • You can try to call her again.
  • She would like to work / would love to work as a journalist.

2/ Verb + -ing

enjoy, stop, finish

Examples:

  • Do you enjoy travelling?
  • Please, stop asking me!
  • I finished reading the book yesterday.

3/ Verb + to + infinitive or + -ing

begin, start, continue, love, like, hate, prefer

Examples:

  • They began to play / began playing tennis when they were 6 years old.
  • It started to rain / started raining.
  • We continued to talk / continued talking after he had gone home.
  • My sister loves to paint / loves painting.
  • I really like to go / like going to the cinema.
  • My dad hates to watch / hates watching serials.
  • I prefer to live / prefer living in an apartment.

4/ Verb + preposition + -ing

look forward to, think of

Examples:

  • We´re looking forward to seeing you.
  • I´m thinking of buying a new computer.
