Dr. Monte:

In the 10 August ……………. issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine, there was a study that presented there how powerful lifestyle is for preventing chronic diseases. Let´s go to gym-bo at the Fitness Rocks Training Center to get more on this story.

Gym-bo:

Hi, dr Marty. This study looked at over ………………………..people with an average age of ……. and followed them for ……. years and the researchers looked  for four specific lifestyle habits: not smoking, eating a diet high in …………….., vegetables, whole graines and lower red meat, exercising at least 3 and half hours per …………….. and maintaining a body mess index less than ……... What they found was over this period of time those people who adhered to all four of these healthy lifestyle habits had a ……..% reduction in the risk of developing a chronic disease as compared with people who did not live these four lifestyle habits. Now, specifically they found that ………..% of all cases of type two diabetes were prevented, ……..% of all cases of coronary heart disease, …….% of stroke and about ……% of all cases of cancer. So, these were dramatic results. Now, what the researchers also found was that even having one of these healthy lifestyle habits conveyed significant health ……………….. . And there were increasing benefits for each additional healthy lifestyle habit that a person had.

Dr. Monte:

Doctor David Katz of the Yale Medical School was ……………….. by the Medical Journal to write a guest commentary on this study. I was able to talk with Dr. Katz in a telephone ……………………. for Fitness Rocks Podcast 145 and this is what he had to say about the …………………  of lifestyle to prevent chronic diseases:

There is nothing that our medical advance has ever …………………… to rival the power of lifestyle over health. And so the point that I try to make, every chance I get, that sounds like you and I are a sort of crusaders on the same ……………….. is that health is really in your ……………., what you do with your feet and fork every day …

Dr. Monte:

Gym-bo, you clearly love hanging out in the ………… . What can you tell the audience about the best ………… of the exercise with the best exercise equipment?

Gym-bo:

Well, that´s right, Dr. Marty, I do like to hang out in gyms. That´s why people call me Gym-bo. But you don´t need to fancy gym to get the benefits of ……………. . One of my favourite pieces of exercise equipment is the …………… path in my town. And if you don´t have a bike path, a sidewalk or quiet neighbourhood street work just as well. Walking briskly for ….. minutes a day turns out to be a very powerful form of exercise in preventing chronic diseases. In fact, Dr. Steven Blair, who is ………….. of the most respected researchers in the area of exercise and health, talked about the benefits of modern fitness and Fitness Rocks Podcast  097:

By a large people who are moderately ……………, have about half the risk of dying from  any cause, dying of heart disease and from cancer, developing type two diabetes, developing ……………………  syndrom, on and on.

Now, in that interview, I asked Dr. Blair: what would the person have to do in order to achieve the moderate levels of ……………….. that his research has shown to be preventive for chronic diseases like type two diabetes, coronary heart disease, cancer and other forms of chronic diseases? And this is what he ………. to say:

Moderate fitness is, as we have found in our research, is produced by 30 minutes of moderate intensity of physical ………….. such as walking on most days of the week.

So, brisk walking on a bike path or on a neighbourhood street is a great form of exercise. If you ……….. the gym, that´s great too.

Chef Eat-right, besides exercise, what we eat is a critically ………………. lifestyle habit. What is your ………….. on the best diet?

Chef Eat-right:

Yeah, listen, there has been a lot of confusion about this and there really shouldn´t be, ………………… research over the past couple of decades has ……….. very clearly that a diet high in fruits , vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans and lower red meat are associated with low rates of chronic diseases like type two diabetes, coronary heart disease and cancer. Now, these diets have sometimes been called mediterranean diets or there are other ………….. for them but what really matter is that people …….. fewer refined processed foods and more fresh fruits and vegetables. And how that´s helpful.

Dr. Monte:

Thanks guys, that was Fitness Rocks Podcast 001, there are over ……… audio podcasts at the Fitness Rocks  website www.fitnessrokcs.org.
